The reason I do it is some UK sites (the only one I can think of off the top of my head is HMV, a music store) simply don't accept a foreign billing address or foreign cards. I live in the UK and use Curve for US cards. They charge no fee up to a certain amount per month, (edit: limit is £500 monthly, see below) only using the current Mastercard forex rate, and then the DCC kicks in. It does not work with all cards, e.g., US Bank Credit Cards charge a Foreign Transaction Fee if the the charge comes from a foreign merchant, regardless if the charge was already converted to USD.My tip: Buy gift cards of the respective shops during the week if you really need to buy there on the weekend. There is an additional weekend fee of 0.5% (for USD/EUR/GBP) or 1.5% (if other currencies are involved).

If you need to convert more per month, you either need to pay a fee of 2% or you may need to upgrade your Curve card (probably not worth it, as it comes with a monthly fee) or ask your spouse/partner to also get a Curve card.

  • There is a limit of 500 EUR or GBP per month of money that can be converted without additional fees with the free Curve Blue card.
  • Merchant codes/categories are forwarded, so if you pay with Curve in a Grocery store, you will still get the cashback based on having spent money in the grocery category.
  • For many card issues (such as Chase and Citi), this completely avoids the Foreign Transaction Fee).
  • You can select that Curve converts any purchases to USD, so your US credit card will be charged in USD and not in a foreign currency.
  • If you pay with your Curve card (can be also added to Google/Apple Pay), the charge is forwarded to any one of your linked cards selected in the app.
  • You essentially link your US cards (Visa and Mastercard) to your Curve card, so it's not really an independent card, but rather a frontend for your other cards.
  • There is little to none exchange rate markup for now (no dynamical currency conversion or other terrible exchange rates!).
  • The trick is based on getting a free Curve Blue card, which is currently available for everybody with ties to Europe, but is also expected to come to the United States soon. I recently came across a pretty cool solution that completely removes foreign transaction fees on those cards. The problemĪmazing travel cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve without foreign transaction fees, are great to pay for restaurants and travel, but when it comes to paying for groceries or other everyday purchases most top cashback card come with a FOREIGN TRANSACTION FEE of 3% and more (such as Chase Freedom Flex and Citi Custom Cash giving 5% and more in cashback), which makes them much less attractive to be used when spending time abroad. *) Obviously, there is a reason for this: US credit card issuers charge much higher merchant fees in the US than what is allowed in many European countries. As most people with international experience can confirm, US credit cards offer by far the most generous rewards* in cashback or bonus points. I'm an expat spending half of my time in the US and the other half in Europe.

I hope this is useful for some people here. You can get the free Curve card (from the UK, available in Europe, but soon also in the US) to link to your US cards and then avoid Foreign Transaction Fees to get the maximal cashback through cards like Chase Freedom Flex or Citi Custom Cash (5-7.5% effective cashback on groceries etc.).
